The history of surfingin Lacanau

Surfing first came to Lacanau in the 60s, with the creation of the Lacanau Surf Club in 1968. Club members waited until 1979, more than 10 years, before organizing the first surf competition. The competition brought together pro and amateur surfers for a grandiose event that left its mark on the surfing world and its era.
In 1983, this surfing competition was renamed the Lacanau Pro and became one of the key stops on the professional surfing circuit, the World Surf League. International surfers such as Tom Curren and Kelly Slater were discovered here. The competition still exists today. In fact, it’s fair to say that the Lacanau Pro is one of surfing’s most historic competitions, and one of the most sought-after worldwide.

The surf spot: La Nord
La Nord is a beach opposite a surf club called Surf Club Banana Surf Shop Café. This spot is renowned for its high level of surfing and is very popular with local sports enthusiasts. Easy to reach by car, you’ll have no trouble discovering it during your stay.
The surf spot: La Super Sud and Le Lion
This surf spot is very well known in the region. Le Lion is located south of Plage Centrale, on Plage Super Sud. The current is reputed to be strong. For the same reason, this beach and spot are not recommended for novice surfers. For seasoned surfers, on the other hand, this spot is absolutely ideal. Added bonus: the atmosphere is calm and tranquil. Enjoy it!
Surf spot: L’Alexandre
This surf spot is one of the wildest and most authentic in Lacanau. Accessible only on foot or by bike, it caters for all levels. All surfers are welcome, and sharing is a must. The waves are beautiful and the atmosphere warm and friendly. Take a stroll to L’Alexandre,one of Gironde’s finest surf spots!
The surf spot: Jah Point
This spot is very original, wild and relatively unknown. Which explains why it’s mostly frequented by locals and not so much by tourists. As far as we know, Jah Point got its name from a local surfer who frequently went there to surf. The spot is not far from the Lion and is aimed at experienced surfers. Swimming here is quite dangerous, so don’t bring your children and be very careful.
