The châteaux routeof the Médoc in Gironde

The Route des Châteaux in the Médoc is a famous tourist route north of Bordeaux. This region is renowned for its vineyards and the production of high-quality, renowned wines. The route des châteaux offers visitors the opportunity to discover magnificent châteaux, explore vineyards and taste renowned wines and discover grands crus classés (in moderation). The wine route passes through Margaux, Pauillac, St Estèphe, St Julien and Moulis.

Take to the road on Bordeaux’s best-known departmental road and discover the Médoc vineyards. From Bordeaux, discover :

  • First stop in a village at the gateway to the Medoc: Ludon Médoc. Discover the Nadalié cooperage, the beautiful fairytale château of Agassac, and Château Paloumey.
  • Macau on the estuary for a bucolic stroll
  • Labarde, one of the Médoc’s oldest winegrowing estates, along with Château de Dauzac, Château de Siran and Château de Giscours.
  • Margaux and its many châteaux, including the best-known, Château Margaux with its grands crus classés and its superb residence in a green setting with sacred vines, as well as Château Kirwan, Château Marquis de Terme and others.
  • Saint Julien de Beychevelle and chateau de Gruaud Larose, chateau Branaire Ducru etc.
  • Pauillac and Château Lafite Rothschild or Château Bellegrave
  • Saint Estèphe and its 60 châteaux
  • Saint Seurin de Cadourne and the Maison du Tourisme et du Vin for discussion, sharing and tasting.

Worried that your children won’t enjoy visiting Médoc wineries? Rest assured, the Médoc estates have plenty to keep them occupied. At Château Saint-Estèphe, for example, there’s a coloring table for younger visitors. At Château de Villambis, in Cissac-Médoc, children can enjoy a blind tasting– not of wine, of course, but of organic, unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices. An original idea to encourage youngsters to develop their sense of smell and taste.

The Médoc is also the ocean, pine forests, large lakes and the Gironde estuary for families to explore. During your stay at the campsite, set sail from Pauillac for the island of Patiras for an unforgettable boat trip. Climb the 122 steps of the 30-metre-high Patiras lighthouse to admire a remarkable view of the Médoc vineyards and the Gironde estuary. The Médoc also boasts renowned seaside resorts such as Le Verdon-sur-Mer, Soulac-sur-Mer, Lacanau-Océan and Le Porge. These Médoc towns offer stretches of sand that are perfect for swimming and water sports.
